Sexually transmitted infections testing

You will be asked a history of the problem and some routine questions regarding your health. Although you may find some of the questions to be of a personal nature, it is important to answer these honestly to ensure that you receive the best care.

Male screening

Depending on your symptoms, we may need to take a swab from your water passage by using a fine plastic loop. We do not use and never have used 'umbrellas'. You will also be offered a urine test for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, and blood tests for HIV and syphilis. Other tests may be offered depending on your history.

Female screening

You will be asked to remove your bottom set of clothes and put on a gown (which fastens at the back). You will first be asked to lie on a special examination couch that makes it more comfortable for you and also makes it easier for the doctor or nurse practitioner to examine you. A special instrument that assists in making it easier for you to be examined internally will be used before the swabs are taken. The procedure is similar to having a cervical smear test performed, if you have had one of these in the past. Depending on your symptoms swabs may be taken for gonorrhoea, trichomonas (TV), thrush, bacterial vaginosis (BV). You will also be offered a urine test for Chlamydia and gonorrhoea and blood tests for HIV and syphilis. Other tests may be offered depending on your history.

Results

If you have had a swab taken our own laboratory may look at this and can give an early result. Treatment may be offered during your visit based on these results. Common treatments given are antibiotics, creams and lotions.
If these early results are negative it does not necessarily mean that you have no infection. It is important to remember that the main results of these tests take about two weeks to complete.
If the follow-up tests (main results) prove normal (no signs of an infection) then we will not contact you. If, however, there is a problem with the main results that follow, then we will contact you - usually within two weeks. It is for this reason that we ask for a contact number and address. You may be advised to not have sex until all the results are available.
