Miss Balmer gained a BSc honours degree in Microbiology in 1979, and then studied Dentistry at Leeds Dental School, qualifying in 1983. She gained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the Royal College in 1987, following a clinical career in oral surgery and is currently a consultant in oral surgery at Liverpool University Dental Hospital.
Miss Balmer is actively involved in the teaching of dental undergraduates, dental postgraduates and DCPs and has a postgraduate teaching certificate , diploma and masters in clinical education. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, an honorary clinical lecturer and Associate Postgraduate Dental Dean.
Colette’s major educational interests include the development of competency workplace based assessments and portfolios. She was the secondary care representative on the national Dental Foundation Portfolio working group, one of the appointed members of the national mapping and curriculum group for the ISCP programme in Oral Surgery and is also the DF2 representative on the National Advisory Board for Foundation Training in Dentistry. She is chair of the portfolio national subgroup and is an elected member of the British Association of Oral Surgeons Council. She sits on the educational subgroup, and is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Oral Surgery.
