Avril Macpherson
BDS (Edin), MFDS RCSEd, MSCD RCSEd, DipConSed (N’Castle)
Avril came to Liverpool as Consultant / Honorary Clinical Lecturer in Special Care Dentistry in March 2010.
After qualifying BDS in Edinburgh 1986, she worked for 5 years in oral & maxillofacial surgery before undertaking vocational training and working as an associate in general dental practice. She embarked on a career in special care dentistry in 1993 as a community dentist , SDO & latterly Assistant Clinical Director with Lothian Salaried Dental Service before appointment to the Consultant job here in Liverpool in 2010.
Avril is an examiner for the RCSEd in MFDS, MSCD and the new Intercollegiate Membership in Special Care Dentistry. She is Regional Faculty Adviser in SCD to RCSEng and a member of the Executive of the British Society for Disability & Oral Health.
She was appointed to the post of Associate Clinical Director of Liverpool University Dental Hospital in 2011.
Her clinical and research interests include the management of patients with significant medical compromise, comprehensive care under general anaesthesia, clinical risk management and the role of propofol in conscious sedation in dentistry.
