Biography
Imelda Bates is Professor of Tropical Haematology at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and an Honorary Consultant Haematologist at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. She studied medicine at University College London and following training in general medicine, infectious diseases and haematology she worked in Africa and South-East Asia. Her research interests are focused on low-income countries and include public health aspects of anaemia and blood transfusion, diagnostics and laboratory systems, and the implementation and evaluation of capacity development. She has served on the WHO anaemia working group and is currently on the RCPath International Committee. She is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and is a co-editor of Dacie and Lewis’ Practical Haematology.
