Paul Rooney qualified from University of Sheffield in 1984 and undertook training of colorectal surgery in Nottingham from 1988-1996. His MD thesis was ‘cancer prevention of colorectal cancer’ and he undertook clinical fellowship at the University of Toronto in 1994. Mr Rooney was appointed colorectal surgeon at the Royal Liverpool Hospital in 1996 which concentrated on the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, particularly ileoana pouch surgery and Crohn’s disease. Since his appointment at the Royal, Mr Rooney has been the colorectal cancer lead and the chair of the Merseyside and Cheshire Network. Mr Rooney is also a council member of the Association of Coloproctology of Great Britain and Ireland.
