About Liverpool University Dental Hospital
Located next to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, the Dental Hospital occupies a self-contained modern building. It has undergone a series of major refurbishments in recent years which have significantly extended and upgraded its surgeries, teaching clinics and patient waiting areas.
The hospital has approximately 150 dental units, including six teaching clinics of up to 20 units each, consultation and teaching suites for all the dental specialties and its own dental technical and histopathology laboratories.
The hospital caters for a variety of dental health needs including surgeries for dental extractions, minor oral surgery and designated clinics for the treatment of medically compromised patients and patients with latex allergy. In addition there is a general anaesthetic extractions surgery and recovery area and operating facilities for day case patients requiring treatment under general anaesthesia or intravenous sedation.
Specialist departments include Restorative Dentistry (Conservation, Prosthetics, Periodontology), Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral Surgery and Oral Medicine and a Consultant-led Dental Sedation Unit.
There are strong links with the Regional Maxillofacial Unit at Aintree Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, a leading centre nationally for the treatment of oral cancer, all of whose consultants hold sessions in the Dental Hospital. The Regional Cleft Palate Unit, based at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, holds weekly joint sessions at the Dental Hospital .
The Liverpool University Dental Hospital has strong links with the University of Liverpool and John Moores University and has an annual intake of undergraduate dental students. The School has Clinical Professors in Restorative Dentistry, Primary Dental Care, Paediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics, Dental Science and Molecular Oncology.
Dental research is a major focus of activity within the school which provides excellent facilities for both clinical and laboratory based research with well-equipped laboratories housed in an adjacent building, with annual research income achieved through contracts and grants, including Medical Research Council and Wellcome grants. The school also enrols postgraduate students on courses leading to either taught or research based higher degrees.
