Easy Read Information

The Liverpool Ophthalmic Reading Centre is researching new ways to cure problems with eyes.

This page gives you information about the work of the centre.

The Liverpool Ophthalmic Reading Centre (LORC) is part of St Paul's Eye Unit, Royal Liverpool University Hospital and is strongly linked with the research activity of the Department of Eye and Vision Science, Institute of Ageing and Chronic Disease, University of Liverpool.

Who we are

The Liverpool Ophthalmic Reading Centre was established in 2005 to support multi-centre clinical trials on eye diseases consisting of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy and is linked to reading centres in Belfast and Moorfields, London. All three reading centres form the Network of Reading Centres UK (NetwORC UK) coordinated by the Central Angiographic Reading Centres (CARF) in Belfast.

In addition to its grading of Angiographic and Tomographic images for Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy for clinical trials, the Liverpool Ophthalmic Reading Centre also provides grading to local, national and international programmes, screening for sight threatening Diabetic Retinopathy.

Retinal Image Grading

Ophthalmic Grading consists of our highly trained Graders and Clinicians at the Liverpool Ophthalmic Reading Centre (LORC), reviewing various types of high quality photographic images and scans of the back of the eye (the retina) to allow us to objectively evaluate, classify and create detailed reports on two of the main causes of sight loss in the UK, Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) and Diabetic Retinopathy for ophthalmic research studies to confirm clinical diagnosis.

Image types we use

  • Stereo Colour Fundus Photography
  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)
  • Fluorescein Angiography
  • Indocyanine Green Angiography

The Ophthalmic Image Graders in the LORC are externally accredited to perform grading of retinal images in commercial and grant funded studies.
