The Research & Development department is a central corporate function within the Trust. The department, in collaboration with the
The R&D department takes an organisation-level lead in ensuring that research is conducted and managed to high scientific, ethical and financial standards. It works closely with all research staff to prepare grant applications to a variety of funding bodies and contributes to developing an active research organisation.
The department works closely with the Trust's Corporate Management Team, which has representation from each area in the organisation. This ensures research is aligned with the Trust's objectives and allows development of research activity.
Prime objectives
The prime objectives of the R&D Department are:
- To facilitate the Royal Liverpool University Teaching Hospital, its employees and patients to work together with the
- Ensure the Trust achieves the Performance Targets agreed in its contract with the Department of Health for portfolio NHS R&D funding
- Improve the quality, quantity and relevance of R&D activity within the Trust
- Invest in high-quality clinical research
- Recruit and train first-rate researchers
- Help researchers achieve external funding from grant-giving bodies and commercial sponsors and to increase the Trust's external income from research
- Provide research support services; ensuring the highest standards of research governance
- Ensure all R&D projects in the Trust are appropriately peer reviewed, approved by a Research Ethics Committee, comply with research governance standards and statutory requirements, and notified to the National Research Register
- Develop R&D training and educational opportunities for Trust researchers
- Work collaboratively with high quality basic science departments in the
- Raise the local and national profile of research within the Trust and develop appropriate collaborations
- Promote good clinical research practice in the Trust and strive for ongoing improvements, including evaluation of all aspects of performance
- Encourage commercial exploitation of our scientists’ discoveries.
- Engage public and patients and involve them in future bids
- Encourage all who enter the RLBUHT, whether as staff or patients, to understand the benefit of engagement in clinical research both for immediate patient care and for future progress in preventing and treating illness.
The R&D Department collates and maintains a central register of research projects undertaken by the Trust, enabling the reporting of activity and research expenditure to the Department of Health.
