This page gives you information about our specialist services for people with problems with their shoulders and elbows. It includes information about the key staff and how to contact them.
Our shoulder and elbow services form part of the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit. As a unit we aim to provide the best possible care for our patients by continually developing our services and remaining at the forefront of upper limb surgery. We aim to achieve this by continuous evaluation of our service and involvement in clinical research.
We currently provide a full spectrum of upper limb services to the Liverpool population and also specialist services for patients across the North West and North Wales who cannot have their condition treated locally.
We treat all conditions around the shoulder and elbow but have recognised expertise in the following areas:
If you wish to find information about a specific problem or operation you may find this in one of our patient information leaflets.
Our clinics take place on Tuesdays when the consultants are in clinic together. Where possible we offer a one stop service meaning we can perform clinical assessment, x-rays and an ultrasound scan on the same day. This will often mean a definitive treatment plan is put into place on the same day as the visit. If more specialist and time consuming investigations are required these will not be performed on the same day.
We have three consultant radiologists who specialise in musculoskeletal disorders and work with us to ensure the most appropriate scan is performed and the correct diagnosis is achieved. One of the specialist radiologists is in outpatient clinics with us to review or perform scans on the day that the patient is seen in clinic.
Physiotherapy is a critical part of the treatment of problems around the shoulder and elbow. Working closely with us are two specialist therapists who have an extended role. The extended role allows the therapists to be in the out patient clinic with the consultant. For the most complex problems, decisions regarding the best treatment for an individual will be a joint decision made between the treating consultant, specialist physiotherapist and patient.
Associated services
We work closely as a team and with other departments particularly radiology and physiotherapy services. We hold a weekly multi-disciplinary meeting which is attended by the consultants, radiologists and physiotherapists.

We run a number of courses aimed at the further education of surgeons from across the UK and the rest of the world. We regularly have surgeons visiting our centre to learn specialist techniques.
