The Oral Diagnosis Clinic at Liverpool University Dental Hospital provides emergency treatment for priority groups, such as following injury, or uncontrolled bleeding. The Oral Diagnosis Clinic cannot provide treatment for all patients with toothache, but because we provide training for dental students and junior hospital dentists, we are able to offer limited treatment for a small number of patients who may be in pain or have other urgent conditions. The following groups of patients are accepted for emergency dental treatment:

  • patients who have suffered trauma to their teeth/mouth as a result of an accident or injury
  • patient with a swelling of the face/jaws (e.g. due to a dental abscess)
  • patients who have bleeding from their mouth (e.g. following removal of a tooth)

No appointment is needed and patients are seen on a first come first served basis until the clinic is full.

Oral Diagnosis Clinic

Patients arrive and complete a medical history form whilst they are sitting in the waiting area. Patients are initially assessed by a nurse in order of attendance, unless we have concerns about their condition.

If you are accepted for treatment, you may be asked to return on another day (or session). Please note: not all patients who fill out a confidential medical history form will be accepted for treatment.

The number of patients we see depends on the availability of staff and students on the day.

We regret that we may not be able to treat all patients who are complaining of toothache, however all patients will be assessed against the treatment criteria. See Contact Us for further details on who to call for emergency help.

The doors to our service open at 8.15am and assessments start at 8.45am Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
