
Oral Medicine is the specialty of dentistry concerned with the oral health care of patients with chronic, recurrent and medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region, and with their diagnosis and non-surgical management.
The specialty sits at the interface between Dentistry and Medicine. The key difference from Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is that the emphasis in Oral Medicine is on conditions that are primarily managed without the need for surgery.

The Unit of Oral Medicine at Liverpool University Dental Hospital is led by Professor Anne Field and Dr Bijaya Rajlawat. It currently sees over 2000 new patients per year.
The Unit provides a comprehensive Oral Medicine service for Merseyside and Cheshire. Tertiary referrals are also received from other parts of the North West and the Isle of Man.
Multidisciplinary clinics are held for patients with Sjögren’ssyndrome, chronic facial pain (liaison psychiatrist and restorative dentist in attendance), dysplastic oral lesions (maxillofacial surgeon in attendance) and oral manifestations of dermatological disease (dermatologist in attendance).The Unit continues to participate in research concerning the pathogenesis of Sjögren’s syndrome and the molecular and clinical determinants of oral epithelial dysplasia. There are close links with Ophthalmology and Rheumatology to facilitate the management of patients with mucous membrane pemphigoid and Behçet's Disease.
