How to safely cut down on your drinking

In these extraordinary times, advice to our patients who may be experiencing problems due drinking have changed. To keep you safe, and ensure we are making the very best use of our hospital services we will not be providing face to face appointments.

We have therefore provided you with this advice on how to stay safe and reduce your drinking.

If you do  need to speak to a member of the alcohol care team you can call 0151 706 3283, but we ask that you do this only if absolutely necessary.

  • Recommended drinking levels for both men and women are “no more than 14 units per week spread evenly over 3 days or more”.
  • If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all,

Physical Dependence on Alcohol

This is present when if you try to cut down or stop drinking you get symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. This can be caused by stopping drinking suddenly. Symptoms may include;

  • sweating
  • nausea & vomiting
  • shaking or tremors
  • memory loss & disturbance
  • hallucinations (seeing something that is not there)
  • delusions (thinking you’re in a situation that is not real)
  • fits (seizures)

IF YOU EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE SYMPTOMS IT COULD BE DANGEROUS TO SUDDENLY STOP DRINKING.

IT IS THEREFORE VERY IMPORTANT TO CUT DOWN OVER DAYS OR EVEN WEEKS

How to reduce Your Alcohol Intake:

  • Keep a Drink Diary so you know exactly how much you drink.
  • Do not drink from cans or bottles; use the same size glass when pouring drinks.
  • Drink plenty of water, juice etc
  • Eat small amounts often (Every 2 – 4 hours)
  • Do not place yourself in risky situations e.g. Pub, Parties etc
  • Follow the plan a day at a time – Continue your Drinks Diary as you are reducing
