Inpatients are patients who need to stay in the hospital.

This page is about people who need to come to the hospital for an operation that is not an emergency.

This page has information about

  • How their stay in the hospital is organised

  • How to contact us

Who are we?

The Inpatient Booking Department is a team of clerical staff dedicated to helping patients who are to be admitted to hospital for Elective Surgery.

What is Elective Surgery?

This is any procedure (usually done in an operating theatre, but not always) which was planned for in advance.

Do I count as being admitted?

Any procedure carried out counts as an admission, even if it's just for something small like an injection and you only come in and leave on the same day.

What do we do?

ENT Admissions Team

Our Team helps to arrange your admission to either of our hospital sites for ENT Elective Surgery. "ENT" is an acronym for "Ear, Nose and Throat". (sometimes known as otorhinolaryngology). We will send you details of your admission. We do not, however, choose your date for surgery.

Surgery Admissions Team

Our Team helps to arrange your admission to either of our hospital sites for elective surgery for:

  • General Surgery - (including lumps and bumps, lipomas, hernias, gallstones)
  • Colorectal Surgery - (Surgical speciality dealing with disorders of the rectum, anus, and colon)
  • Hepatio-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Surgery - (surgery of the liver, pancreas and biliary system)

We will book you a Pre-Operative Assessment appointment once we know your date for surgery. We do not, however, allocate you a date for surgery as this is a medical decision made by your consultant and his team.

We provide clinic support and perform reception duties for the Pre-operative assessment (Pre-Op) nurses. The majority of patients to be admitted for elective surgery will need a Pre-Op appointment before their surgery.

Our Team helps to arrange your admission for Urology Elective Surgery. This will normally take place in Broadgreen, with patients who are not staying overnight going to the Day Case Unit, and those staying overnight on Ward 2. We will book you an appointment for Pre-Operative Assessment when the consultant lists you for surgery.

Changing your date for surgery or pre-operative assessment

Your pre-operative assessment is arranged by the ENT clerical support team, and your consultant's secretary arranges your surgery date.
