Chair appointed ahead of proposed hospital merger

The Chair of a proposed new merged hospital Trust has been announced.

Sue Musson will chair the Interim Board of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the name of the proposed merged organisation of Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Sue will also become the substantive Chair of the Board at the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust from September 1 2019, until the organisation’s proposed merger with Aintree University Hospital takes effect.

Sue is currently Chair of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS FT. She has extensive experience in providing leadership to strengthen collaboration and strategic change, particularly within the NHS.

Commenting on her appointment, Sue said:

"I am delighted to be offered the role of Chair of the new merged organisation and look forward to the opportunities that will arise from bringing together the two organisations to improve the experience of patients. I recognise that there will also be challenges we must face. I believe that by working collaboratively, we can tackle the health issues that are prevalent within our health economy, provide consistent and high quality care to all of our patients and make Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust the best place to work for all our staff."

"I am also looking forward to becoming Chair of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust and working with the team on a range of different developments, including completing the new Royal Liverpool University Hospital, which will be an outstanding facility for the people of the city."

"It has been an enormous privilege to serve as Chair of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for the past two and a half years, and I am very grateful to have held this role. Being offered the opportunity to deliver the planned merger of two major Trusts was the only opportunity that could have tempted me away from Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. I want to thank all of my Lancashire Teaching Hospitals colleagues for making me so welcome and for making my time here so enjoyable."

"Whoever succeeds me as Chair will be very fortunate to work with our exceptionally talented and caring staff and a fantastic Board and Council of Governors. I thank them all for their support and wish them the very best for the future."

Sue will start in post as Chair of the Interim Board on July 1, 2019. The merger is expected to take place in October, subject to the decision making process of NHS regulators, which are assessing the proposals.

The current acting Chair of Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust, Mike Eastwood, has agreed to remain in post, supporting the organisation and the transition towards the merger until the end of August.

The current Chair of Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Neil Goodwin, will remain in post, supporting the organisation until the merger is complete.

Since the start of May staff, patients and the public have been invited to share their views on the merger as part of an ongoing engagement programme, the first part of which closed on Friday, 14 June.
