From September 1 2019, the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust has a new chair and chief executive
They will see in an exciting new future for Liverpool's hospitals including the anticipated new Royal a stone's throw away from the existing Royal in the heart of the city.
“An exciting time for Liverpool”: Who is new chair Sue Musson?
Sue Musson has nearly 25 years’ board-level experience as an executive and non-executive director in commercial and public sector organisations, helping them improve their strategy, performance and organisational cultures. She has extensive experience of building local partnerships and of working collaboratively to integrate, develop and improve services.
Sue is an experienced NHS chair, previously serving as chair of Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust. Her involvement with the NHS started in 2007, following her son’s recovery from a serious illness. Sue feels privileged to hold a leadership role within the NHS and is committed to supporting the Trust in providing the best possible patient and staff experience.
On her appointment, Sue said:
"This is an exciting time for the organisation and the city. We have a great opportunity to look at the delivery of our services and ensure we are offering the best possible care for patients across Liverpool. I am really looking forward to getting to know our staff and ensuring that we work together to develop our values and behaviours. I am very much looking forward to getting out and about across our hospitals, meeting as many of you as possible and hearing your views."
Sue holds a first-class honours degree in History from Columbia University and is a dual citizen of the UK and the USA.
As Trust chair, Sue chairs the Board of Directors and is responsible for ensuring the Board develops its vision, strategy and culture to support the delivery of outstanding care for the population, chairs the shadow Council of Governors (CoG) and supports the effectiveness of the Council, has a close working relationship with the Trust’s chief executive and acts as an ambassador for the Trust with partners and stakeholders at a local, regional, national and international level.

As well as his duties at the Royal, Broadgreen and the Liverpool Dental hospitals, Steve Warburton is also chief executive at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and chief executive for the interim shadow board for the proposed Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Steve is passionate about patient safety and improving healthcare for the people of Liverpool.
About his appointment, Steve said:
"I was born and bred in Merseyside and have spent all my working life in the NHS in Liverpool and Sefton. I am therefore, extremely proud to have been appointed into the CEO role and to be able to continue my career here at the Royal. I am passionate about patient safety and improving healthcare for the people of our great city. I am also keen to continue the work on ensuring Liverpool is leading the way in terms of education and research as we move towards the new Royal and develop the new health campus."
